Urine, saliva, hair, and blood are four of the most commonly used methods to detect drug use. Each method has advantages and disadvantages.
Generally speaking, urine is the most reliable established method of detection. Since the kidneys are the primary route by which drugs and their metabolites are excreted from the body, drugs are easily detected in urine. The technology behind drug detection in saliva is still being developed.
However, the collection is less intrusive and does not require bathroom facilities. Hair testing provides a longer window of detection, but is a more costly option that requires a more complicated collection process.
