How Does the Drug Testing Process Work?

Drug and alcohol testing must be completed by a trusted provider. Most drug testing is done at a local collection site, where a hair or urine sample is obtained and sent to a certified laboratory for analysis. Some organizations have their own on-site collection lab. Affordable On-Sites offers a unique program of on-site testing as well as a Durham, NC walk-in clinic location.

When you are asked to submit to drug and alcohol testing services, here is what the process looks like and what you can expect:

  1. Arrive at the clinic (or on-site location) for your scheduled appointment wearing a mask (required).
  2. Check in with the receptionist.
  3. Prepare for a routine urinalysis or hair collection – wash hands, sanitize collection area.
  4. Your specimen will be collected in an appropriate container and labeled with your identification.
  5. The specimen will be properly stored until it is delivered to the laboratory.
  6. Negative results are normally available within 48 hours.
  7. Positive tests are extensively re-confirmed to ensure there is not a false positive.

Affordable On-Sites employs the services of a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to review all positive results. In the case of a positive result, the MRO will normally contact the subject to determine if there is a medical explanation for the positive results.

What Tests are Administered?

The most common testing option is a standard 5-Panel test. This simple urine or hair test looks for the most common recreational or street drugs, including Phencyclidine (PCP), Marijuana (THC), Cocaine, Opiates (such as codeine and morphine) and Amphetamines (including methamphetamine).

Some employers request a 9-Panel test, which includes testing for Phencyclidine (PCP), Opiates, Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Methadone, Propoxyphene, as well as prescription drugs that are legal to possess and use. Employers also may test for alcohol use.

When Should I Get My Test?

Every drug has a slightly different effect on an individual, however most drugs stay in a person’s system for two to four days after consumption. For consistent or chronic drug users, results may be detected much longer—up to 14 days for marijuana users and up to 30 days for sedative users. The ordering organization may dictate the date and time of day you must supply your specimen.

When Will a Drug or Alcohol Test Be Required?

You may be asked to submit a blood or urine sample in any of the following situations:

  • Pre-Employment—The most common type of testing is pre-employment, where companies request candidates undergo drug testing as a condition of their new employment.
  • Current Employees/Post-Employment—Employers or organizations may ask for drug or alcohol testing for current employees or when an employee leaves a position.
  • Post-Accident—A common policy companies implement is the requirement for drug testing in the event of a workplace accident. This ensures that impairment by drugs or alcohol wasn’t a factor in the accident.
  • CourtOrdered—Sometimes, those who are suspected of committing a crime or violating probation will be asked to submit to a random drug or alcohol testing.
  • SelfDirected—An individual who wants to know the outcome of drug or alcohol testing processes may elect to submit to specimen collection by choice.
